Frequently Asked Questions

Each year a new King and Queen are chosen for each Organization; because of the secrecy involved there are often many questions about the process. We'll do our best to answer some of these questions as they pertain to gowns and costumes, as well as some other questions we often hear.

Q: How do I book an appointment?

A: You can submit a request through our inquiry forms on the contact page. We will reach out to you via email.

Q: How long does it take to get a custom gown made?

A: It depends on the project and the time of year. Queens and Kings will ideally contact us about 8-12 months before their event. Debutante and Ball gowns need less lead time to make, but the earlier we can start the process the better so that we can shop for the most interesting fabrics during our summer buying trip. For graduation, bridal or other formal events we'd like to have at least 2-4 months.

Q: What should I bring to the initial consultation?

A: Bring any ideas you might have about fit, style or color, inspiration images, or Pinterest boards to help us get a feel for what you like and don't like. If you don't know what you want, that's great too! We're here to help you discover your dream dress or costume. We'll probably take measurements at this meeting as well, so regular under garments (no sports bra) and clothing that is less bulky is preferred.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: The price can vary greatly depending on the fabric, style and most especially the level of decoration. Unadorned debutante and ball gowns start at $3,000, with a Queen's gown starting at $12,000.

A Queen's collar can range between $5,000-$8,000. We make these for both the organizations and for any individual Queen wanting a custom collar and keepsake.

A King's costume (without cape or mantle) starts around $6,000 with cost variables including level of adornment and customization of the appliqués.

A Captain's costume, which typically includes a tunic, cape, and hat, starts around $14,000 and can also go up from there depending on adornment.

Whatever your needs, we can set a budget and design something wonderful that works for you!

Q: What is included in the cost of a Queen's gown?

For our New Orleans Queens, we are able to offer an, "all inclusive," style package. This not only includes a custom designed, one-of-a-kind gown, but also a custom corset, harness, and an RDH representative the night of the ball. We are by your side until you step out onto the ballroom floor to assist with everything from getting dressed, to getting in and out of the limo, to making sure everything is in place and looking perfect for photos and your debut!

Q: How does a Queen carry the collar and mantle?

For the Queen to be able to carry the traditional Medici collar all night, as well as pull the mantle (which can be up to 16 feet in length and almost 60 pounds!) we custom build a metal harness and corset for each Queen. The harness bars are shaped over the Queen's shoulders to ensure the most comfortable fit possible. The bars are covered with padding and and decorated to coordinate with the gown. The collar is attached to harness for the night of the ball, and the look is completed when the Organization's long, elegant mantle is attached to the crossbar at her back for her Grand March around the ballroom floor.

Q: Royal Design House looks like such a fun place to work!

How can I get a job there?

A: We are always open to people reaching out about work! We are most often hiring in August or September and usually again in November or December to help wrap up the season, but that's not a hard and fast rule. We often take on a summer intern as well. If you are inquiring about a summer internship it's best to contact us after Mardi Gras so that your inquiry doesn't get lost in the shuffle!
