Our Story
Royal Design House began in 2015 when close friends and work colleagues, Katie Johnson and Ashley Sehorn, recognized in one another a rare talent and passion for carrying on a dying art form. They put to work their combined 10 years of knowledge passed on to them by veteran Mardi Gras Costumer Ilaine Hartman. After their first season they were honored as one of The Gambit's "Top 40 Under 40" for their contribution to New Orleans and Mardi Gras history. In the Spring of 2020, Katie became the sole owner and Head Designer of Royal Design House.
Born and raised in Welsh, Louisiana, Katie watched her own mother open and successfully operate a restaurant for 30 years. Needless to say the entrepreneurial spirit runs deep. With degrees in both Fashion, and Costume Design and a general love for dressing up, Katie’s worlds collided here in the Big Easy. The fine techniques of high fashion, the pageantry of the Theatre, and the rich culture and traditions of Mardi Gras keep her passion alive.
The elaborate gowns and costumes coming out of Royal Design House for the royalty of Carnival have been seen on ballroom floors and thrones of over 20 organizations throughout New Orleans as well as Mississippi and Alabama. Even his majesty Drew Brees donned an RDH original for his reign over the Mystick Krewe of Lousisanians in 2024.
It is hope of Royal Design House to continue to celebrate every year by keeping the grand traditions of Mardi Gras alive through the centuries old artistry and craft that is Carnival costuming!
At Royal Design House we relish the long and storied history of Carnival in New Orleans and across the globe. It's important to us that our designs reflect the deep traditions of Mardi Gras while also embracing classic styles and the latest trends. Most importantly we love working closely with each client to design something that is beautiful and meaningful to them.
